Women have smaller brains but think faster
A recent study found that the female brain is smaller than the male brain.
However, research also indicates that women use their brains more effectively.
Female brain uses energy and the number of cells less to get the same results, sometimes even better than the performance of the male brain.
Men may have a series of more neurons, but women have more connections between neurons. It allows women to think more quickly.
Research conducted by a number of neuroscientists from the University of California assisted their colleagues in Madrid is to find out why women are able to have a level of intelligence equal to men, although the size of their brains an average of 8 percent smaller.
The study focused on the part of the brain called the hippocampus, which plays an important role for memory and emotion.
For men, the greater the size of the hippocampus and the greater number of neurons in the brain, the higher the level of intelligence.
However, it is different in women – the size of his hippocampus does not necessarily indicate a higher level of intelligence. In fact, the study found that the smaller the size of the hippocampus in women, the better the performance of the brain.
Research that’s done on the results of psychological tests to 59 women and 45 men aged 18 to 27 years were published in the scientific journal Intelligence.
Professor Trevor Robbins of the University of Cambridge believe, that this is an interesting study, although it still requires further research.
“This study found that the smaller the size of the hippocampus in women, the better the brain work. Size does not always determine how good the performance of a component, “said Robbins.
“The smaller size could indicate a series of nerve cells is more solid or more active signal transmission between brain cells, meaning they are able to work more effectively.”
