Lead contained in lipstick even in small amounts, could harm IQ, behavior and learning ability.
A recent study in the United States involving 22 brands of lipstick found that 55 percent contain lead.
Underwriters Laboratories revealed that 12 products lipstick that made sampled, tested positive for toxic substances with the highest level of 3.22 parts per million.
Commenting on the findings, Dr. Sean Palfrey, Medical Director for the Boston Lead Poisoning Prevention Program warned that the low levels of lead exposure can even cause serious health risks and can affect mental health.
“We now know that even the lowest levels of lead can harm your IQ, your behavior, and your ability to learn,” he said.
Unfortunately, until now no standards set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to limit levels of lead in lipstick, and hand over the composition of substances toxic to the manufacturer to set safety limits.
